Compressors
Characteristics
- Highly efficient (low power consumption; less heat to reject)
- Full capacity modulation
- Starts against full system pressure
- Comparatively smaller size and mass
- Few parts, simpler and cost effective
- Low vibration capability
- Simple construction
Unlike conventional reciprocating machines, Sunpower compressors use linear motors to drive a piston in direct coupling. Some details include:
- The motor uses a moving permanent magnet, rated at typical efficiencies of 88% ~ 93% which are higher than that of induction motors.
- The motor drives the piston directly, eliminating crankshaft and connecting rod mechanisms which reduces the number of parts to a minimum, and saves the energy required to operate them.
- Linear motion with minimal side forces, allowing the application of gas bearings.
- The gas bearings provide non-contact operation between the running surfaces, eliminating friction and wear, and permitting long life.
Sunpower's compressors have a variety of current and potential applications.
